Alternate Signatures

Although Montgomery published all her novels and the vast majority of her periodical work under her preferred name, “L.M. Montgomery,” there were times, particularly during her early years as a frequent contributor of short stories, poems, and miscellaneous pieces to periodicals, that she opted for her full legal name, “Lucy Maud Montgomery,” a range of initialisms, or pseudonyms. What follows is a list of these alternate signatures in alphabetical order. For more on Montgomery’s use of these names, see the afterword to A Name for Herself: Selected Writings, 1891–1917 (2018), the first volume in The L.M. Montgomery Library.
