In addition to twenty-four books, five hundred poems, and one hundred miscellaneous pieces, L.M. Montgomery published over five hundred short stories throughout her career, between 1895 and 1940, in a wide range of magazines and newspapers in North America and beyond. Earlier versions of all the stories appearing in Chronicles of Avonlea (1912) and Further Chronicles of Avonlea (1920) were published in periodical form, as were most of the stories in The Blythes Are Quoted (2009), edited by Benjamin Lefebvre. In addition, over one hundred stories have appeared in collections compiled and published after Montgomery’s death: The Doctor’s Sweetheart and Other Stories (1979), compiled by Catherine McLay; Akin to Anne: Tales of Other Orphans (1988), Along the Shore: Tales by the Sea (1989), Among the Shadows: Tales from the Darker Side (1990), After Many Days: Tales of Time Passed (1991), Against the Odds: Tales of Achievement (1993), At the Altar: Matrimonial Tales (1994), Across the Miles: Tales of Correspondence (1995), Christmas with Anne and Other Holiday Stories (1995), all edited by Rea Wilmshurst; and After Many Years (2017), edited by Carolyn Strom Collins and Christy Woster.
Montgomery’s complete short stories are being collected in future volumes in The L.M. Montgomery Library, organized chronologically.
