Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning (2008)

Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning is a three-hour 2008 telefilm produced, written, and directed by Kevin Sullivan. It acts as a prequel and sequel to three of Sullivan Entertainment’s previous productions: Anne of Green Gables (1985), Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (1987), and Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story (2000). It first aired on 14 December 2008 on CTV.

The telefilm alternates between a middle-aged Anne (Barbara Hershey), who has returned to Prince Edward Island near the end of the Second World War with the intention of writing a play and selling Green Gables, and the child Anne (Hannah Endicott-Douglas) prior to her arrival in Avonlea. Now a widow, Anne reminisces about her early childhood in Nova Scotia when she discovers a letter hidden in the floorboards at Green Gables and makes some unexpected discoveries about herself, her family, her past, and her future. This telefilm has no connection to any novels by L.M. Montgomery or to Budge Wilson’s prequel Before Green Gables, which had been published earlier in 2008. A novelization by Kevin Sullivan was published by Key Porter Books the same year.

Also appearing in the telefilm are Shirley Maclaine as Amelia Thomas, Rachel Blanchard as Louisa Thomas, Ron Lea as Gene Armstrong, Bernard Behrens as Gabriel Blake, Natalie Radford as Bertha Shirley, Ben Carlson as Walter Shirley, Joan Gregson as Hepzibah Leach, and Kyra Harper as Nellie Parkhurst. Patricia Hamilton makes a cameo appearance as Rachel Lynde, and appearing briefly through archival footage are Colleen Dewhurst as Marilla Cuthbert and Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert Blythe.
