Tightly Knotted to a Similar String is episode five of the first season of the Northwood Entertainment long-form television series Anne with an “E” (2017–2019). It first aired on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on 16 April 2017. It was written by series creator Moira Walley-Beckett and directed by Patricia Rozema. It is preceded by “An Inward Treasure Born” and was followed by “Remorse Is the Poison of Life.”
This episode stars series regulars Amybeth McNulty as Anne Shirley, Geraldine James as Marilla Cuthbert, Dalila Bela as Diana Barry, Lucas Jade Zumann as Gilbert Blythe, Aymeric Jett Montaz as Jerry Baynard, and R.H. Thomson as Matthew Cuthbert. Recurring cast includes Corrine Koslo as Rachel Lynde, Ella Jonas Farlinger as Prissy Andrews, Helen Johns as Mrs. Eliza Barry, Christian Martyn as Billy Andrews, Kyla Matthews as Ruby Gillis, Miranda McKeon as Josie Pye, Lia Pappas-Kemps as Jane Andrews, Stephen Tracey as Mr. Phillips, and Glenna Walters as Tillie.
Official Synopsis (CBC website): “Anne must deal with the inevitability of womanhood when she gets her first period. Marilla and Matthew acclimatize to parenthood and revisit moments of their youth through Anne.”
The title refers to the phrase “inextricably knotted to a similar string,” appearing in chapter 23 of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre.
