What Are the Greatest Books in the English Language? is a round table published in the January 1916 issue of Bookseller and Stationer (Toronto) in which “Well-Known Canadian Authors Write Interestingly on This Subject.” Montgomery’s response appears alongside those of five fellow Canadian authors who enjoyed considerable popularity at this time: Arthur Stringer (1874–1950), Stephen Leacock (1869–1944), Agnes C. Laut (1871–1936), Emily Murphy (1868–1933), and Robert J.C. Stead (1880–1959). The introductory paragraph and Montgomery’s response appear in The L.M. Montgomery Reader, Volume 1: A Life in Print.
