French Translations

Although L.M. Montgomery’s books appeared in translated editions almost immediately (the first translation of Anne of Green Gables, Anne på Grönkulla, appeared in Sweden a year after the book’s publication in English), French translations happened only much later, in spite of the fact that French is one of Canada’s official languages. In fact, the first two French translations of Anne of Green Gables appeared in Europe: Anne ou les illusions heureuses (translated by S. Maerky-Richard) in Switzerland in 1925 and Anne et le bonheur (an abridged edition translated by Suzanne Pairault) in France in 1964. It was only in the 1980s and 1990s that French Canadian translations of her books appeared from three separate Montreal publishers: Éditions Pierre Tisseyre published Emily of New Moon and its two sequels as Émilie de la Nouvelle Lune (translated by Paule Daveluy) in 1983, 1988, and 1989; Éditions Québec-Amérique and Charlottetown publisher Ragweed Press jointly published Anne . . . la maison aux pignons verts (translated by Henri-Dominique Paratte) in 1986; and Éditions Flammarion released Les vacances de Jane, Pat de Silver Bush, Mademoiselle Pat, and Le château de mes rêves (translated by Hélène Le Beau) between 1990 and 1992.

Between 1988 and 1995, Québec/Amérique added eighteen more translations of Montgomery titles to its Collection Littérature d’Amérique: Traduction series (translated by Hélène Rioux and Michèle Marineau), eventually classifying their Montgomery editions into three interrelated clusters: “Anne . . . La série” [Anne . . . the series], consisting of ten numbered volumes, including Anne . . . la maison aux pignons verts (1986), Anne d’Avonlea (1988), Anne quitte son île (1988), Anne au Domaine des Peupliers (1989), Anne dans sa maison de rêve (1990), Anne d’Ingleside (1990), La vallée Arc-en-ciel (1991), Rilla d’Ingleside (1992), Chroniques d’Avonlea (1991), and Chroniques d’Avonlea (1991); “Anne . . . La suite” [Anne . . . the continuation], consisting of five volumes numbered 11 to 15, including Le monde merveilleux de Marigold (1991), Kilmeny du vieux verger (1992), La conteuse (1993), La route enchantée (1994), and L’héritage de tante Becky (1994); and “Anne . . . les nouvelles” [Anne . . . the short stories], consisting of four volumes of Rea Wilmshurst’s collections, including Sur le rivage (1990), Histoires d’orphelins (1992), Au-delà des ténèbres (1993), and Longtemps après (1995).

Most recently, Monsieur Toussaint Louverture, a publisher located in France, has begun a new translation of the Anne books, in two cases using Montgomery’s stated preferred titles for its editions. Anne de Green Gables, Anne d’Avonlea, and Anne de Redmond are available now, and the publisher has announced plans to reissue Anne de Windy Willows, Anne et la maison de ses rêves, Anne d’Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, and Rilla, ma Rilla between now and 2023.

Included on this page is a list of known French translations of Montgomery’s books, with a literal English translation of each title for reference. It is worth noting that although the Swiss translation of 1925 and the Parisian translation of 1964 retain Montgomery’s preferred signature of “L.M. Montgomery,” all of the remaining translations are signed “Lucy Maud Montgomery.”
