Overview
L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables: Fire and Dew was a ninety-minute television movie produced by Breakthrough Entertainment (Toronto) that premiered in Canada on YTV on 1 July 2017. The cast includes Ella Ballentine (Anne Shirley), Sara Botsford (Marilla Cuthbert), Kate Hennig (Mrs. Lynde), Julia Lalonde (Diana Barry), Kate Trotter (Mrs. Barry), Natalie Lisinska (Miss Stacy), and Martin Sheen (Matthew Cuthbert). The movie was written by Susan Coyne and directed by John Kent Harrison.
This is the third of three telefilms from Breakthrough Entertainment, preceded by L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables (2016) and L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables: The Good Stars (2017).
The movie’s title borrows from the lines from Robert Browning’s poem “Evelyn Hope” that appear as the epigraph in Montgomery’s novel: “The good stars met in your horoscope, / Made you of spirit and fire and dew.”
Synopsis
From the DVD release:
With guidance and encouragement from her spirited her teacher Miss Stacy, Anne Shirley commits to her studies and earns a spot at Queen’s College in far-off Charlottetown. But when Anne departs for Queen’s, Matthew and Marilla feel a sudden emptiness in their lives, especially when Marilla’s failing eyesight and Matthew’s poor health make life more difficult on the farm. And in Charlottetown, Anne is overwhelmed by loneliness, city life, and the pressure of intense competition—especially from Gilbert Blythe. Facing difficult choices, will Anne find that the dark cloud over her life does have a silver lining?
