Page and Company, 1909), the Canadian Favourites edition of Anne of Windy Poplars (1973), the Bantam Books edition of Anne of Green Gables (1976), the Anchor Canada edition of Anne of Green Gables (2009); Virago Modern Classics edition of Jane of Lantern Hill (2014).

L.M. Montgomery’s books have circulated worldwide ever since Anne of Green Gables was published in 1908. Since then, a growing number of editions has flourished, especially in places where the copyright to her work has expired. But while each edition seeks to entice readers through new cover art, a close comparative reading of these editions reveals a surprising number of inconsistencies in the texts themselves.

As a component of my work comparing the texts of the first editions of Montgomery’s books to those of the mass-market paperback editions published in the 1980s and 1990s (by Bantam Books in the United States and Seal Books in Canada), work that I have undertaken in earnest as part of the L.M. Montgomery Readathon, this part of the website is devoted to Montgomery’s international publishing history. It will begin with the 400+ editions that are part of my personal collection, and my ambition is that eventually it will offer an exhaustive overview of all editions that have appeared worldwide, in English and in translation, along with some tips to help readers learn more about the editions that are part of their own collections.

This part of the website is continuing to evolve as of 2024. New editions are still being added, and at some point in the future I will welcome contributions from fellow Montgomery readers as a way to fill in gaps in my own collection.
