The Wreck of the “Marco Polo” (essay)

Synopsis: This essay narrates a shipwreck that occurred on the Cavendish beach in 1883, the summer after Montgomery’s eighth birthday. It was written for a nationwide young people’s writing competition in the Montreal Daily Witness, and although it did not win a prize (as reported in some of her obituaries), her essay was published in that newspaper and reprinted a week later in the Charlottetown Daily Patriot.

Synopsis: This sketch of Saskatchewan was published while Montgomery was an adolescent while living with her father and her stepmother in Prince Albert.

Synopsis: This sketch details Montgomery’s trip, by train and by ship, that she undertook at the age of sixteen as she returned from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, to Cavendish, Prince Edward Island.
