Our Uncle Wheeler (story)

Synopsis: Due to a game of musical chairs involving the spare-room bed and an unexpected visitor in the form of a gruff great-uncle, teenage brothers Rod and Art are horrified when they unwittingly pounce on a sleeping Uncle Wheeler. Scared of their uncle’s wrath, they initially attempt to let their mother blame their friends for the escapade, but once their consciences start to bother them they have a difficult ethical decision to make.

A New-Fashioned Flavoring (story)

Synopsis: Left alone to keep house and to mind their younger siblings while their widowed mother is away visiting her sister, adolescents Ivy and Edmund are startled when an unexpected guest shows up on their doorstep for tea: their estranged bachelor uncle Eugene, who is known for being cranky and miserly. Ivy’s nerves cause her to mistakenly flavour a layer cake with anodyne liniment instead of vanilla, and her anxiety increases when she overhears one of her younger brothers telling Uncle Eugene all about the family’s financial worries, including Ed’s desire to go to college and Ivy’s ambition to study the violin.
