Set in December 1914 and produced without the involvement of the Disney Channel, this television movie is considerably darker in tone and theme than its seven-year predecessor: after nineteen-year-old Felix King is reported “missing in action” while fighting overseas, the rest of the King family attempts to keep up the Christmas cheer. For most of the movie, however, the other characters seem more preoccupied with their own problems than with the suspense of not knowing whether Felix is alive or dead. TV Guide gave the production an A+ rating, and it was subsequently nominated for four Gemini Awards. The movie was eventually rereleased as An Avonlea Christmas.
